SAMOHI SYMPHONY WASHINGTON, D.C. TOUR

The SAMOHI Symphony Orchestra, with Director Joni Swenson, went to Washington, D.C. during the 2012 Spring break. They performed at Schlesinger Concert Hall in Alexandria, Virginia, where their program included the very challenging Brahms Symphony No. 1 and works by Copland, Holst, Vaughan Williams, and Rimsky-Korsakov. They were joined for one piece by the String Quartet from The President's Own Marine Corps Band.
The trip included clinics with members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Peabody Conservatory faculty.
Joshua Bell honored them with a private performance on his Stradivarius, before his concert with the Academy of St. Martin's in the Field, in the Strathmore Music Center.
There was a meet and greet with the charismatic young Dudamel Fellow, Lionel Bringuier, after he conducted the Baltimore Symphony in an evening of Russian favorites.
The SAMOHI Symphony musicians got to see the original, handwritten scores of the Brahms and Copland pieces in the Library of Congress.
The SAMOHI Orchestra Parents Association is grateful for funding the City of Santa Monica provided towards this tour, and for the ongoing support of the Santa Monica and Malibu communities for the SMMUSD's world-class music education programs.
