Santa Monica High School Choir’s Masterworks
Santa Monica High School’s Madrigal Ensemble, Chamber Singers and Chorale team with students from our amazing orchestra and band programs plus professional soloists on the Barnum Hall stage to present Maurice Durufle's Requiem, one of the masterpieces of 20th century choral music. Durufle based the entire work on Gregorian chants, which are sometimes prominent and almost directly quoted from the Liber Usualis, and at other times are discreetly woven into the texture of the background. The result is a sublime and overwhelmingly tranquil setting for the Requiem Mass for Chorus, Organ, and Orchestra. The concert will open with Bach's Motet Lobet den Herrn, BWV 230, seven minutes of non-stop vocal athleticism and an excellent example of the extravagant compositional style of the high Baroque.
Santa Monica High School Vocal Music Director Jeffe Huls leads a pre-concert lecture about the Requiem at 6:30 pm.
