This Tuesday, January 15th at 7pm in Barnum Hall, the Samohi Bands, under the direction of Kevin McKeown and Terry Sakow, will present their Winter Concert.
The concert will feature performances by the Samohi Concert Winds, Concert Band, Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble, as well as special guests the Viking Marching Band in their only Barnum Hall performance of the year.
Musical offerings include
- Amazing Grace, which according to students was sometimes difficult to rehearse in light of recent tragic events in the national news. We hope that the piece will allow the audience a moment of peaceful reflection;
- Leonard Bernsteins political overture Slava!, which may remind listeners of the euphoria they felt when the 2012 election season finally ended; and
- Some lighter fare, including John Philip Sousas Liberty Bell. We are pretty sure that a giant foot will NOT come crashing down, as it did when the song was used in the intro to Monty Pythons Flying Circus.
As always, we extend a special invitation to the Santa Monica City Council, SMMUSD Senior Cabinet members, SMMUSD Board of Education, VAPA Department & VAPA District Advisory Committee, directors of the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation, Samohi Principals, and music instructors at all SMMUSD schools.
Free parking will be available in the Civic Center Lot at the corner of 4th Street and Civic Center Drive, across the street from the Samohi's 4th Street gate. Take a ticket as you enter, but do not pay when you return; the lever arm will be raised when you exit.
Suggested Donation: Adults $10, Youth & Senior $5
