Apple products for film and video editing are overtaking the older, much more expensive digital technologies and the Moviola is history. Final Cut has the advantage of using ordinary Apple hardware that can go anywhere in the world. Editing is even done on laptops in airplanes. I use Final Cut for create my DVDs, including of Symphony performances which use the sound originally recorded on our 24-bit/96kHz super fidelity equipment.
If you live near an Apple Center Store, check the schedule for their free classes in Final Cut and related products, and look for up-to-date information on the Apple site.
The falling price of professional quality 3CCD digital video cameras have made professional quality work possible on low budgets for students, beginning film makers, and established film makers who want to make projects that would not be commercially viable on a film stock budget.
I am a member of BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts) and I have had interesting discussions with people like Steven Soderberg about the aesthetic differences between movies shot on film and in digital. (Virtually everything is now edited in digital.)
A caution for digital videographers:
Several years ago I was enthusing with Michael Apted (Bond movie director, President of the Directors Guild, and maker of the great documentary series Seven Up) about how wonderful it was going to be for him to shoot his award-winning documentaries digitally and not be limited by the cost of film. The next time we talked he told me he had learned a great lesson. You cannot just go out and shoot everything in sight. You have to plan a digital project as carefully as if you were paying for film, or you will be overwhelmed in the editing room.
I recommend the following books:
THE VERY BEST BOOK FOR FINAL CUT
FINAL CUT PRO HD HANDS-ON TRAINING
by Larry Jordan
496 pages, color screen captures, DVD with lesson materials
$44.99 ISBN 0321375718 Peachpit 2006
Member Price $31.49 http://peachpit.com/
This is the best written, best designed, and best illustrated book I have ever found on Final Cut Pro, and it provides an excellent model for technical books on any subject.
The text is comprehensive and concisely and clearly written. Everything is illustrated with color screen captures large enough to see the details of the controls. The spacious and visually effective layout contributes to conveying the information.
This book takes you through the basics and goes on to Motion Effects, Filters and Keying, providing you with the skills you need to create and output a very polished movie.

AN INDISPENSABLE BOOK FOR FINAL CUT TECHNOLOGISTS
OPTIMIZING YOUR FINAL CUT PRO SYSTEM (Apple Pro Training)
A Technical Guide to Real-World Post-Production
by Sean Cullen, Matthew Geller, Charles Roberts, Adam Wilt
912 pages - mostly text with grayscale illustrations, DVD with files for lessons
$54.99 ISBN 0321268717 Peachpit 2006
Member price $38.49 http://peachpit.com/
This book is awesome! If you use Final Cut, this book is a gold mine of what you need to know about everything related to making your hardware, editing software, and Mac system all work together in the best way possible. No matter where I opened it, there was something I needed to know, or know more about.
Like all the Apple Pro Training Series, this book is structured as lessons, but it is also an encyclopedic reference. It not only tells you what to do but explains why you are doing it so you understand the underlying technology.
Those familiar with the technical articles I have been writing for 20 years know the importance I put on explaining the way things work, not just telling how to make them work. This book gets my admiration for how well the authors have succeeded in explaining such a complex subject involving so many different types of technology.
This technical book is an absolute essential that is worth it's weight in gold for everyone running a post-production system based on Final Cut.

A BOOK EVERY FCP STUDENT AND PROFESSIONAL MUST HAVE
ADVANCED COLOR CORRECTION AND EFFECTS IN FINAL CUT PRO 5 (Apple Pro Training)
by Alexis Van Hurkman and Digital Film Tree
648 pages - color illustrations, DVD with files for lessons
$49.99 ISBN 0321335481 Peachpit 2006
Member price: $34.99 http://peachpit.com/
One of the most essential tasks in creating a professional film or video matching the color between cuts within a scene. Added to this is the need to create an overall color look for the project. The ability to control white balance when making a digital video makes it much easier to get a good base for fine tuning color. When white balance is working automatically, the change of Kelvin temperature as the sun raises and lowers during the day is nowhere near the problem is with film.
To understand how color correction works in Final Cut it is very helpful to be familiar with Photoshop. The principals functions are the same, though the controls look different.
This book begins with the basic digital effects and related functions that can be done in FCP, including Motion, Filters, Compositing, Animating, Nesting Sequences, Variable Speeds, Adding Text, and Keying.
The next section deals with Color Correction. You are told how to evaluate your image using the various tools in FCP. Next the book covers Controlling Contrast, Controlling Color Balance, Correcting and Coloring Images, Color Continuity, Secondary Color Correction.
The final section covers using Live Type for titling.

THE BEST BOOK FOR TITLING IN FINAL CUT
CREATIVE TITLING WITH FINAL CUT PRO
by Dinnah Morgan
191 pages, large format, color screen captures
$44.95 ISBN 1-57820-225-6 CMP Books 2004
www.cmpbooks.com
www.tfcpus.web-linked.com
This marvelous, must-have book begins by explaining the psychology, function, form and artistic possibilities of titles. It then shows you how to create various kinds of titles in Final Cut.
Whatever your project, remember that the titles are what the audience sees first and set the mood for what follows. Revered names in the movie industry like Saul Bass have made a career of creating titles, the artwork from which is often also used in the advertising. There has long been a campaign by myself and many others in the movie industry to have an Oscar for titles.
Having gotten you excited about the importance and creative opportunities in titles, this book explains how to achieve various effects in Final Cut, with additional references to LiveType which comes bundled with Final Cut, and to Boris Calligraphy.
Another section deals with Photoshop files in Final Cut. (Photoshop layers can be brought into Final Cut and will appear as separate video tracks that can be turned in motion graphics.)
The book also covers the sound and music used in titles. (Soundtrack for creating original scores comes bundled with Final Cut.)
This beautifully designed and well-illustrated book was created by the Ilex group in Cambridge, England, and was printed in China on art book quality paper. The high quality of the printing is important because the screen captures though very reduced from their original on-screen size, still retain their detail in print (you may find a magnifying glass useful in some cases).
This one of a series of excellent books done by Ilex and published in America by CMP Press. (See additional CMP titles reviewed below.)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE BEST BOOK FOR DESIGNING DVD MENUS
DESIGNING DVD MENUS
by Michael Burns & George Cairns
191 pages, large format, color screen captures
$44.95 ISBN 1-57820-259-0 CMP Books 2004
www.cmpbooks.com
www.dvdmus.web-linke d.com
Academy 'screener' DVDs are sent to us without menus or interactivity, and when I compare those with the later commercially released DVDs, I realize what an enhancement it is to have well designed menus that offer the viewer controls and choices.
This well-illustrated book takes you from conceptualization to completion of DVD menus, and each step is important for a satisfactory final result.
The two principal software based editing programs are Final Cut for the Mac and Premiere for Windows. Each has its associated DVD authoring program. Premiere has Encore (and an excellent sound editing program Audition) and Final Cut has DVD Studio (and Soundtrack, the big brother of Garage Band, for creating scores). This book uses an equal number of examples from Encore and DVD Studio. (Note: The last part of the names of Final Cut and DVD Studio changed from Pro to HD in 2004.)
This is another in the series of well-designed books by the Ilex group in Cambridge, England, and published in America by CNP Books. Again the screen captures are very reduced in size and the art book quality printing done in China is essential to retaining the details.

This book is updated for DVD Studio Pro 4 which comes bundled in the Final Cut Studio 5 and 5 Universal.
Even when using Final Cut for editing, I am not alone in finding it quicker and easier to use iDVD for anything but a final commercial DVD because DVD Studio is not an intuitive program, and that is why this book is important.
Each chapter is a lesson on one aspect of DVD creation, using lesson files on the DVD. Chapters cover storyboarding a DVD and planing its interactions, setting chapter markers, building various kinds of menus, adding subtitles and making Web links.
If you have the source materials to work with, you will learn how to give the user a choice of multiple audio tracks and camera angles. The camera angles are of particular interest when making DVDs of symphony orchestra concerts.
Upon completing the course material in this book, you can become a certified Apple Pro by taking the certification exam at an Apple Authorized Training Center. To find an Authorized Training Center near you, go to www.apple.com/software/pro/training..

BEHIND THE SEEN: How Walter Murch Edited Cold Mountain Using Apple's Final Cut Pro and What This Means for Cinema
By Charles Koppelman
348 pages, large format, illustrations in grayscale and color.
$39.99 ISBN: 0735714266 New Riders 2004
Member price: 27.99 http://peachpit.com/
This book provides an in-depth insight into the process of film making in the digital editing era, and documents the first use of Final Cut Pro for an epic feature, which was filmed on location in Eastern Europe. I had the opportunity to talk with the director Anthony Minghella about this project and the ability to explore alternatives that digital editing during filming allowed him. This book gives that same project from the perspective of the editor, Walter Murch, in the form of a journal, notes and comments, as presented by author and fellow film maker Charles Koppelman. Koppelman was given unique access to document the work of Murch, one of the greats of film editing, who was Minghella's collaborator throughout the filming process.

USEFUL BOOKS ON THE ART AND TECHNOLOGY OF SOUND RECORDING:
Sound Design: The Expressive Power of Music, Voice and Sound Effects in Cinema
by David Sonnenschein
250 pages.
$19.95 ISBN: 0941188264 Michael Wiese Productions 2001
This is a book to get you thinking about all the things you can accomplish with sound. It is a book that appeals to those with an imagination open new ways to look at the science of hearing and the language of nonverbal sound.
This book does contain things that are not mainstream science regarding the effect of various sounds on the mind and body, and not generally accepted theories on how aspects of music relate to the story.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound, 2nd Edition
by David Lewis Yewdal
424 pages, grayscale illustrations.
$42.95 ISBN: 0240805259 Focal Press 2003
This book by a pro explains in language the beginner can understand, the technology, the art, and the business of creating sound for motion pictures. The author takes the reader onto the set, into the post-production studio, and explains the budgeting process over which it is just as essential to have control as over the artistic aspects.
This book is better than any single course given by a film school and is essential reading for all film makes, not just those most directly involved in sound. (It amazes me how many film makers are satisfied to know almost nothing about vital aspects of their project, often the music and sound.)
The sound designer (when the project even has one) is often very under appreciated, but the filmgoer discerns, if only subconsciously, the difference been good and poorly done sound design.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mastering Audio: The Art and the Science
by Bob Katz
319 pages, two tone illustrations, color insert, large format.
$39.99 ISBN: 0240805453 Focal Press 2002
This is a very important book for everyone serious about good quality sound. Katz is a knowledgeable advocate for good practices and gives clear explanations of how they can be achieved. It is a book I will be carrying around with me to explain and defend the way things should be done.
This is not a book for newbies, but for those who already have a solid foundation. It is filled with ideas to consider and debate and hopefully adopt, most important of which is his own 'K-System' for metering and monitoring in Chapter 15.
Being involved with movies and with recording classical music I am very concerned with the problems of dynamic range, which Katz discusses from several different perspectives.
He tells how to modify dynamic range and discusses levels and compression, which are hotly debated topics among recording engineers, sound designers and producers. He advocates that for digital recording there should be a 'cushion' above headroom to prevent distortion. He goes at length into the art and science of equalization and discusses noise reduction.
Katz makes the point that what is necessary compression in a car or for the sake of neighbors, is not enough dynamics for a theatre. He advocates that players come with a built in compression facility the listener can choose to use or not.
He also explains that if you are going to normalize you must do it to the entire album at once and never track by track, or when it is played the string quartet will be as loud as the 1812 Overture!
This is a very valuable book that deals with theory and concepts, rather than specific hardware and software, so it is not out of date even though it was published in 2002.

INSTANT SURROUND SOUND
by Jeffrey P. Fisher
191 pages, grayscale illustrations and screen captures.
$34.95 ISBN 1-57820-246-9 CMP 2004
www.cmpbooks.com
This is a clearly written book for those who want to learn the basics of some aspects of recording for surround sound. The author is an expert on Acid, Sound Forge and Vegas.
This book covers the formats of surround sound, and the basics of how to record for surround, how to set up the hardware and software for post production, managing channels and downmixing, mixing for surround, all the elements of audio post production, and exporting the files.
One can have a whole library of books on sound recording and subscribe to every magazine and still not know a fraction of the current information. I am involved in recording symphony orchestras in 24-bit/96kHz and 192kHz, and we are constantly upgrading, as better equipment becomes available. Sound recording is by far the most complex and rapidly changing of the media in which I work.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Art of Mixing: A Visual Guide to Recording, Engineering, and Production, 2nd Edition
by David Gibson
344 pages, color illustrations, large format.
$49.99 ISBN: 1931140456 Artistpro 2005
This is a very unusual book. It employs a visual 3D metaphor to present the concepts of sound mix in various various orchestral groups and for various types of music. For those who are not visual, the concise text stands on its own at a basic level.
All the visuals were not immediately communicative and it took a day for the two parts of my brain to link up on the same information, but I did gain insights from using the visual part of my brain for auditory concepts.
This not a book for everyone and I suggest you look at it in a book store before deciding to buy it.

Logic 7 is has new and improved features and this book will teach you how to use many of them. It focuses on MIDI and does not go deeply into plug-ins and what they do.
The DVD has song and lesson files, free loops and a trial version of Logic Express 7.

281 pages grayscale screen captures illustrations - CD-ROM.
$45 ISBN: 0-321-26793-1 Adobe Press 2005
Member price: $31.50 www.peachpit.com
The Audition sound editing program is an essential part of the Adobe Video Collection. The lessons in this book teach you to use the wide scope of facilities for recording, mixing, analyzing, looping, editing, and mastering, including noise reduction, audio restoration, spectrum and phase analysis. The small size of the screen captures is a problem for a book on a program with complex controls. (Note: The Adobe Classroom in a Book series is being given a new design with larger type, better layout and color screen captures, which I would hope for in the next edition of their Audition book.) www.adobepress.com
ADOBE AUDITION SCREEN CAPTURE FROM PROGRAM WHEN CREATING A SOUNDTRACK,

USING SOUNDTRACK to produce original music (Soundtrack 1.2)
by Douglas Spotted Eagle
478 pages, grayscale screen captures, CD with tutorials, loops, etc.
$34.95 ISBN 1-57820-229-9 CMP 2004
www.cmpbooks.com
Soundtrack comes bundled with Final Cut, and can also be bought as a stand alone program. Soundtrack is the big brother of Garage Band (without some of Garage Band's facilities such as viewing- but not printing- the notation as you play or play back).
This book does cover using Soundtrack to compose, but Soundtrack is basically a program to assemble music clips into a soundtrack for a DVD or movie, and is not a program composers would chose to use. I am not thrilled with most of the synth instruments in Soundtrack and Garage Band, including the new Symphony Jam Pack, but it comes with enough instruments and loops to get you started.
This book takes you through Soundtrack in an comprehensive if text-dense way. The CD contains tutorials, plug-ins and royalty-free loops. It covers version 1.2.
