The Arts & Crafts movement is typified by functional handcrafted objects with simple lines in which the elements of construction are the elements of design. The Movement began in England in the mid-19th Century as a protest against the Industrial Age with its machine produced products. The Gothic revival had popularized the arts and crafts of the Middle Ages, and William Morris, the Pre-Raphaelite painters, architects, furniture makers, and designers, were inspired by this earlier time
The Arts & Crafts Movement in the United States created the California Bungalow Style, including the masterpieces of architecture by the brothers Charles Greene (18681957) and Henry Greene (18701954) in which the interior design with its built-in cabinetry and fixtures such as porch lights, was an integral part of the design of the home. The Arts & Crafts Movement also created the mission style oak furniture of Gustav Stickley (18581942)
William Morris and his followers designed books for which they created a distinctive style of typeface. P22 has used the font designs of American Dard Hunter from his Roycroft era (1900-1910), for their Arts and Crafts Ornaments Volumw 2 that contains two Hunter designed alphabets and 72 graphic extras.
